Bop School evolved in David Patrick’s Edinburgh apartment, mostly on Thursday afternoons when he would get together weekly with Andy Mears (Saxes); Phil O Malley (Tbn) & Sean Pentland (Bass) to blow tunes. Many hours were spent exploring challenging repertoire and becoming intuitively in tune with one other. Such was the intensity of these sessions that they were regularly referred to as ‘School’ and so the name Bop School suited well. The group recorded and performed several live dates with London based trumpet sensation, Steve Fishwick, where the audiences’ reaction was overwhelmingly positive.
Whilst Bop School will most certainly thrill a purest jazz audience, it is also able to offer a background for more intimate settings (the group is drummer-less) which might include;
restaurants and bistros, art exhibitions, cocktail bars, theatre foyers, hotels and other venues or events that require unobtrusive, swinging jazz. Programmes will be sensitively and appropriately chosen to suit the occasion and we will be happy to discuss this prior to the event itself.
